A Peek Inside

West Village brownstone street
The charming brownstone-lined streets of the West Village
Maple in her apartment
Maple at home, dreaming of outside
Maple looking out the window
Peeking out — the city looks enormous
Brownstone entrance with birds
Pigeons, iron railings, a red door — so much to take in

About the Book

Small Dog, Big City follows Maple, a tiny, caramel-furred dog as she steps outside her West Village apartment and faces the great big city. The honking taxis, rumbling garbage trucks, and towering buildings feel overwhelming… until the neighborhood begins to say hello back.

Told in warm, playful rhyme, the story takes readers on an emotional journey from fear to confidence. Along the way, it captures the whimsical, one-of-a-kind spirit of New York City in one of its most beloved neighborhoods and the universal feeling of finding your confidence, one small step at a time.

  • Written in rhyme — delightful to read aloud for parents and kids
  • Set in the West Village neighborhood of New York City
  • A gentle story about overcoming fear and feeling at home in the world
  • Inspired by a real dog — Maple, beloved West Village resident

An Excerpt

In a charming West Village street,
Where brownstones lean and sidewalks meet,
Lived Maple, a dog, small and sweet,
With caramel fur and tiny feet.
On Bleecker Street, the flowers bloomed,
A taxi drove by with a gentle vroom.
The bodega cat purred a soft hello,
All of a sudden Maple didn't feel so low.
On Grove Street she walked one step ahead,
On Waverly Place, she raised her head.
Maybe the city was loud and tall,
But it wasn't so scary after all.
In a very big city, busy and bright,
Maple felt just the perfect height.
Though streets were wide, loud, and gritty,
Maple was part of this beautiful city.
